Rydalmere (formerly named "Field of Mars") is a Sydney suburb, in New South Wales, Australia.
Rydalmere is located 21 kilometers northwest of the central business district of Sydney, in the City of Parramatta`s local government area.
The oldest grant in the area was established in 1791 by Phillip Schaeffer.
Because of the suburb`s natural features above Subiaco Creek, the district containing the present day Rydalmere, Ermington, and Dundas was initially named "The Ponds."
Shortly after Schaeffer`s, on the northern side of the Parramatta River at Rydalmere and Ermington, more grants were granted to many emancipists, eight marines and two crew of HMS Sirius.
Until around 1800 "The Ponds" were named as "Field of Mars”.
Rydalmere Hospital is a former heritage orphanage, mental institution and now university campus at 171 Victoria Lane, Rydalmere, Parramatta Area, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Previously it was known as the Female Orphan School and the Protestant Orphan School. It is currently located at western Sydney University`s Parramatta South Campus. It was moved to the New South Wales State Heritage List in on April 2, 1999.
