History of North Ryde

The first reference to the region known as North Ryde seems to be after the first public school in the district which opened on January 25, 1878 and changed its name to North Ryde High School in 1879.

North Ryde was primarily farming land, until it was sold to a Catholic parish in 1897. 

North Ryde is an expansion of Ryde's suburban neighborhood called after G.M's 'Ryde Shop.' Papa. He took the name from Ryde's birthplace on Wight Island, UK. Ryde was the term used after the 1840's and accepted as the municipality's term in 1870.
