The name Lane Cove has several possibilities of its origin.
The first written use of the name 'Lane Cove' was recorded by Lieutenant William Bradley. He got it after he had just sailed along the river. Some suggest it was named after Lieutenant Michael Lane, a respected cartographer who worked with Captain James Cook.
However, the name stuck, and was being used to refer to all the land north of the river by the 1800s.
